The Lake County Community Pageant Program is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year.

The program has kicked off the pageant season and is looking for contestants to participate in the town pageants for the titles of Miss, Teen Miss, Junior Miss and Little Miss from Avon Township, Barrington, Beach Park, Buffalo Grove, Fox Lake, Ingleside, Island Lake, Lakemoor, Lake Bluff-Lake Forest, Lake Zurich, North Chicago, Volo, Wauconda Area Township, Waukegan and Zion.

The winners of those town pageants will go on to compete for the Lake County titles in November.

The contestants will participate in a timed interview with a panel of professional judges usually consisting of business people, educators and pageant experts. All contestants are required to prepare a planned speech and also will need to be spontaneous and respond to a pop question. The point value during these pageants is weighed heavily on the communication and public speaking skills of the contestants.

The pageant program teaches life skills, focusing on developing good public speaking skills, teaching responsibility, developing leadership qualities and teaching the importance of getting involved in one’s community.

As a program, participants do a tremendous amount of community service and volunteer work throughout the towns of Lake County supporting food pantries, senior centers and children/families that are in need.

This past year, they supported the Marine Corps with the Toys for Tots program, Bernie’s Book Bank by donating more than 75 books for children, and Ronald McDonald House by making breakfast for the families.
