DIY Scarecrow Day returns to Long Grove

LONG GROVE – The air is crisp, the colors are vibrant, and the historic district of Long Grove will soon perk up with the suburb's biggest homage to scarecrow-making.

On Saturday, Oct. 14, the Historic Downtown Long Grove Business Association presents the annual DIY Scarecrow Day.

"The city of Long Grove is going to transform into Scarecrow City," Historic Downtown Long Grove Business Association's Dave Gayton said. "After families personalize their scarecrows, we'll line them up and down the streets for the rest of the month."

This year, DIY Scarecrow Day is expected to be bigger than last year, when record crowds attended. Residents of Long Grove and the neighboring towns are invited to come out to stuff and dress their own custom scarecrow.

There is no admission for DIY Scarecrow Day, which takes place on Towner Green from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Historic Downtown Long Grove Business Association will provide each guest a basic wood base for their scarecrow, bales of hay, and building guidance. Participants are asked to bring old clothing, shoes, hats, gloves, and accessories to dress their scarecrow. All of the leftover clothing will be donated. The scarecrows will be on display throughout the month of October and visitors will have the opportunity to vote for their favorites.

Participants can win one of many prizes from the merchants in downtown Long Grove!. There will be a $5 voluntary entry free to be donated to local food shelters. The signup form is online at: http://bit.ly/LGScarecrow.
