VOLO — A suspect driving a vehicle stolen from the Volo area several days ago crashed into a semi-truck Tuesday night in Volo and fled the scene, police said.
Lake County Sheriff's Office Deputies on patrol around 9:58 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Four Seasons Boulevard and West Sullivan Lake Road in Lakemoor noticed a 2013 Nissan Altima that had been reported stolen from a Volo residence Sept. 5 and attempted to pull over the driver, Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Christopher Covelli said.
The driver of the Nissan refused to stop, and the deputy eventually abandoned his efforts to pull over the car, Covelli said.
"Due to the driver’s refusal to pull over and the risk to other motorists, the Sheriff’s Deputy discontinued his attempt to stop the stolen vehicle," a news release from the Lake County Sheriff's Office stated.
Less than a minute later, the same deputy observed a collision between the same Nissan Altima and a semi-truck at the intersection of Route 12 and West Molidor Road in Volo.
Covelli said preliminary investigation shows the semi-truck was traveling north through a green light on Route 12 when the Nissan disobeyed a red light eastbound and collided with the truck. Witnesses said they then saw the driver of the Nissan run south from the scene of the incident through a wooded area.
At that point additional Lake County Sheriff's deputies established a perimeter to attempt to locate the suspect, and K-9 units from the Lake County Sheriff's Office, McHenry County Sheriff's Office and Palatine Police Department were brought to the scene. Police were able to track the suspect southbound but lost the suspect 1/4 to 1/2 mile south of the scene of the crash, Covelli said. Police searched for the suspect for roughly three hours. Covelli said he could not provide any information about the suspect at this time, citing the ongoing investigation.
The semi-truck driver, a 50-year-old man from Troy, Missouri, was not injured in the collision, and Route 12 northbound was closed until approximately 2:30 a.m. because debris and oil spilled in the roadway needed to be cleared.
Fox Lake Police, Wauconda Police, Lake Villa Police, Lakemoor Police, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Palatine Police assisted the Lake County Sheriff's Office at the scene.
